Happy New Year!

To all my Muslim brothers and sisters, I’d like to wish you a Happy  New Year! This past weekend was the beginning of the Islamic Calendar month, Muharram 1434 A.H.

With the sighting of the new moon the Islamic new year is ushered in.  The first month Muharram, is a month of great reward and virtue.  Muharram itself means `sacred’ and is from those months which have been mentioned as sacred in the Holy Quraan.
Almighty Allah states in the Holy Quraan:

“Four of them ( Zil-Qadah, Zil-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab) are sacred.”

(Surah At-Tawbah:36)
Let us all take some time and think of the year that was. What goals did we set for ourselves? Were we able to accomplish those goals? If not, what barriers prevented you from them? How do you feel you’ve grown and shrunk in areas of your life and what can you do to improve / change that?
We all want to be the best Muslim, and with all that is happening within our local and global communities, lets all make a pledge to try and make some type of significant impact this year. Whether you choose to help out financially, or are more comfortable volunteering your time, pick a means to help inflict some positive change!
Use the new year as a clean slate and start over! It all begins with your intention!
– Nisar
P.S. Try to fast on the 9/10 or 10/11 of Muharram – other than Ramadan, these are the best fasts!
